Silver Surfer #8

by SeanerSurfer on January 13, 2015

Silver Surfer #8 hit the stands today with a story called "The Damnation Dilemma," by writer Dan Slott and artist Mike Allred. In the seven issues we've received from this creative team, we are given a completely fresh Surfer to read with more grounded storylines. I own most of Silver Surfer Vol 3 and the cosmic rumblings in that series are even more potent then the strongest of what we have been given so far. This is not entirely a bad thing, actually I quite like it. Instead of a series about the Silver Surfer, what we have here is a series about Norin Radd and his new friend Dawn Greenwood. Issue #8's cover confirms this with the illustration of our hero "silvering down," while grabbing Ms. Greenwood.

The first few issues allow our protagonists to meet and highlights both of their need for the brighter side of humanity. This makes the title for #8 especially perplexing. Mike Allred's larger than life pop-sensation stylized art is fun and exciting, but it can hardly be called gripping. In #8 we see Dawn and Norrin breach the surface of a hidden planet, even hidden from his cosmic senses, which is populated by the remaining survivors of Galactus' hunger. These survivors tell Dawn of the Surfer's unsavory past which drives a stake through their fresh friendship. She was just driving Toomie moments ago! This is when Dawn learns of the Surfer's past as a Herald for Galactus, responsible for trillion and trillions of deaths.

The children on Planet Newhaven are all 12 years old or younger, and there are no two alike. The Surfer tells us that he was imprisoned on Earth for twelve years which buds the question, when will we see the stories of the Surfer while he was a herald? We may receive some answers next month with #9 as the cover art shows us that the Silver Surfer and Galactus will be squaring off. How exciting!

This may be my favorite issue of the series so far because it brings the most badass celestial being to the foreground, Galactus. We see that Galactus has been tracing the Surfer's trails through the power cosmic and an altercation is imminent. This is a bridging issue for sure, about to kick-start the most exciting arc of this new run with Galactus coming in #9. I had doubts about Allred handling Galactus when the series first started, but with today's issue it is shown that, while fun and popy, Allred's art can be daring and exhilarating.
