The Star Wars #2
War!... Sorry I couldn’t resist. But things are certainly heating up in The Star Wars #2, as we see the emergence of a giant asteroid that is clearly WAY too big to be a space ship.
The Star Wars, the comic based on Lucas’ original rough draft, continues as the empire presses their attack on the peaceful planet of Aquilae. While everyone and their mothers are seemingly undisturbed by the looming threat of war, General Skywalker’s growing concern may be the only thing that keeps these people alive. To make matters worse, the asteroid that has appeared on their radar? That’s no asteroid, it’s a space station! In order to save the planet and the royal family, Skywalker dispatches Annakin to protect Princess Leia at all costs while he rallies his troops to stop the empire.
The second issue of the series tends to drag a bit, as some of that ‘political mumbo-jumbo’ from the new trilogy rears it’s boring head. The book does pick up speed once the empire presses it’s attack and we are treated to a great space battle of the rebels attempt to squash the ‘death star’. It’s a fun read and the freshness from the last issue still translates nicely as issue 2 manages to avoid the dreaded sophomore slump. Props to Rinzler for making an old story seem new.
Mayhew’s timeless art shines even brighter this time around thanks in large part to the epic space battle that takes place during the climax. It’s something that we may have watched thousands of times on TV and the big screen, but it’s still exciting and still new.
The Star Wars #2 isn’t a perfect issue and while it may become bogged down with some boring political speak, the climax more than makes up for it.
