B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #108: Wasteland Part 2
Things go from bad to worse this week in B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #108: Wasteland Part 2, with Johan and his team on the run from not only mutated humans, but giant bat-like creatures as well. Though a glimmer of hope arrives in pack of wild horses, the team and their new found friends mount up and head to Chicago. It’s not until they arrive in the windy city that everyone realizes just how dire the straits actually are. It seems like the end is a lot more nigh than we thought.
While the rest of Johan’s team may be starting to crack under pressure, Johan is filling into the role of fearless leader quite nicely. It’s rewarding for a reader to have stories, similar to last week’s Abe Sapien, where the main protagonist isn’t some roided out freak in army fatigues, but a complex and intelligent individual trying to find humanity in the horror’s around them. It’s a superhero book for those of you who are burned out on the super. (Unless of course, it’s supernatural)
Wasteland Part 2 continues Part 1’s gritty, war torn story with much aplomb. This is a dark story that is in no way heading toward a happy ending and that’s okay. Mignola and Arcudi’s wearing their horror-flick love on their sleeves this go around and if any of you have ever seen Frank Darabont’s underrated The Mist, then you might have an idea of how this might play out.
Laurence Campbell’s art is still a great fit. This is not a very pretty book, but it is not meant to be. This is a story about a group of solider who are in a horrific situation with the art acting as a perfect mirror for the reader. The stand out though is Dave Stewart’s colours. Black and red dominate this book as each panel is dipped in misery and served on a dark plate of terror.
B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #108: Wasteland Part 2 is shaping up to be a classic B.P.R.D. story, one that is not for the faint of heart. With only one part left, it’s going to be hard to wait for what is sure to be an awfully horrific conclusion.
