B.P.R.D.: Vampire #3 (of 5)
Things begin to hit the fan this week as Agent Anders’ quest to wipe out a vampire covenant takes him face to face with demons, both internally and externally. But as Anders uncover answers, more questions begin to arise like just how much of his soul is Anders willing to lose for vengence?
Picking up right where last issue left off, Anders has now come face to face with Lord Wilhelm, a vampire nobleman whose wife, Elenora, exchanged her soul with Hecate to restore Lord Wilhelm to the land of the living. It was a grand gesture that had sprung some serious consequences resulting in the death of thousands in the name of Elenora’s debt. Now, face to face with the vampire, Anders unveils his true self before Wilhelm as the two clash in a climactic battle.
The delightful twist in this issue makes the aforementioned battle all the more exciting as the stakes, no pun intended, are raised even higher. Anders has been something of an enigma in this series, a rogue Agent who seems to be fuelled by hatred. Now it appears that Anders hatred steams from within as the monster of this book is in fact, Anders. By adding this unique twist to the ‘revenger’s tragedy’, B.P.R.D.: Vampire #3 (of 5) has managed to escape the pratfalls of well-worn territory, and now offers something unique and terrifying.
The art continues to be a source of enjoyment as the creepy enclave of Wilhelm makes for the perfect battleground. The colouring in the issue is definitely a highlight, as the subtle orange glow that fills Anders eyes with rage show a man not far removed from the monsters he’s hunting. The haunting final page produces an iconic splash image that sums up the series perfectly. Once again, great work from Mignola’s team.
B.P.R.D.: Vampire was an enjoyable read prior to this issue, but now with issue #3, the bar has been raised as Mignola and crew have turned our pre-conceived notions of Anders’ journey on our heads. As Anders journey’s further into darkness, we will be there, every horrifying step of the way.
