‘Learn to appreciate partial victories… It’s unlikely we’ll see any other kind.’

The frozen Russian outback heats up this week as A Cold Day in Hell concludes. In typical Mignola fashion, we are treated to a perfectly melancholy conclusion in an issue packed with thrills and chills. Immediately following the events of last issue, Hell on Earth #106 finds Varyara making a final push to regain her power as Agent Giarocco heads into frozen wasteland to find Nichayko and some answers as to why giant monsters keep rising from the ground.

To say that Hell on Earth #106’s pacing is brisk would be an understatement. The stakes are high and the clock is ticking with the immediacy of the B.P.R.D.’s plight leaving a pile of monster corpses in their wake. Once Agent Giarocco manages to kill her fair share of monsters, she grabs Captain Yegrov, the whiniest pilot in all of Russia and finds the ruins of a radio tower that Nichayko discovered last issue. Enter a delightfully creepy battle between some possessed corpses, and baby, you got one heck of an entry into the B.P.R.D.’s library of hits. Mignola and Arcudi keeps us on our toes with a well-paced issue, one that moves at lightning speed, yet manages to find time for the smaller moments that make Mignola’s characters some of the most memorable in all of Comic-dom.

The art department seems to be having a ball with this issue as well. From giant Russian zombies who breathe fire, to Giarocco emptying clips into monster butts, the action is clear, quick and cool. Snejbjerg’s return to the B.P.R.D. world is more than welcome. He offers an exaggerated style that makes the character’s seem larger than life, and creates appropriately empty environments that add to the isolated feeling of the Russian wilderness.

The year of Mignola pushes forward with B.P.R.D. Hell on Earth #106: A Cold Day in Hell (Part 2 of 2) adding another hit to his already long list of hits. Hell on Earth #106 is a fast paced action thriller with a more than satisfying (and bloody) conclusion. Even though this issue wraps everything up nicely, fans will still be left wanting more. At least we can take comfort knowing there’s always something lurking just around the corner.
