It was about time that Black Widow got another series. Not only did that happen but we got a creative team that is perfect for her. Kelly Thompson has been doing outstanding work on many Marvel series. When I heard that she would be writing the new series I immediately got excited. I couldn’t think of anyone I would want more on this book than her.

Now it’s here and does it live up to expectations? Well the short answer is a renowned yes! This book is so much fun and classic Thompson. What I love about Natasha is that she is very guarded, professional, but she has a fun quirky side to her as well. Thompson truly gets this about Natasha. In this issue we got to see Natasha really have fun at work along with her trademark sass. Her interactions with Captain America also made me chuckle a bit.

I don’t want to give any spoilers but the choice of villain in this issue had me raise an eyebrow and really peaked my interest. If said villain is involved then things are really about to get crazy. I do like that this then also won’t go down the cliché path of “her past comes back to haunt her…” that seems to be what we usually get from a ‘Black Widow’ series. Now there could be elements of that but from my knowledge and I’ve read most ‘Black Widow’ series, this villain is not a main part of her rogues gallery. So that means all bets are off and we could be in for a truly new and unique story.

The events in this book good or bad, will definitely have a long lasting impact on Natasha. We have never seen her deal with what is coming down the line for her like what is coming in this series. Will she be changed for the good or the worse? We will just have to keep reading to find out. All I know is that this is the series not only we deserve, but Natasha deserves as well. It was about time Marvel.

The art in this book is also really incredible. It’s so bright and fun, but has an interesting edge and stylistic approach to it. Not only does it suit a ‘Black Widow’ story, but it marries Thompson’s style of writing perfectly. I had to read this issue twice because I couldn't get enough of how amazing each page looked and how good the story was.

Overall ‘Black Widow’ delivers a fresh new direction that couldn’t be more welcome. This book is such a fun and exciting read with some unexpected turns and probably even more to come. Read this book. Seriously, it is so much fun!
