The Fly: Outbreak #1

All I can say about this title is....WOW! Everything about this release far exceeded my expectations. When this was first announced, I asked to be the guy who reviews it because I am a huge fan of the series, even the original (help me....help me...). The Chronenberg Fly is the quintessential movie though, with Jeff Goldblum's amazing performance as Dr. Brundle. His girlfriend, Gina Davis, ends up having a baby at the end of the movie and that baby grows up to be Eric Stoltz in The Fly 2, which was also a pretty good film. This issue picks up right where The Fly 2 ends with Brundle Jr. and his girlfriend trying to keep his Fly symptoms at bay. On top of that, he has his old boss who was transformed in the first movie wreaking havoc in the labs. It's exciting stuff!
The writing is top notch. Seifert obviously did his homework on this one and I loved almost every single moment of this comic because of the amazing dialouge. Add the equally as amazing plot to it and you've got a great recipe for some legendary comics. There is a small section in the middle of the issue that has little to no dialogue, but it's still so captivating and true to the atmosphere. A+ writing from Seifert.
If the writing is amazing, sometimes the art can lack. Sometimes. This time however the art is so masterful that I was taken aback by it as I was reading. This menton3 person is really raising the bar for art in comic books. It reminded me a lot of the art style that the video game Dead Space uses. It was dark and it was vibrant. It was SUPER realistic in every possible way and where guys like Alex Ross can look cartoony, menton3 makes everything look like a photo. If you told me that this person photocopied the faces from the movie and glued them into the comic, I'd believe you. But i don't think that's the case and that's impressive.
Amazing first issue, can't wait for the next one. Pick it up!
