The Walking Dead #138

This was an epic, epic issue chock full of story. We pick up from the last with Maggie on the floor and Carl in the meadow. Maggie is saved by Jesus (ha!) and they throw Gregory into a cell for trying to kill her. Meanwhile, Lydia's people show up to get her and bring a trade. Lydia's mother ends up being the head honcho for them, though a lot of fans had thought that perhaps Michonne was going to be the leader. Still, she seems menacing enough and if the last panel is any indication, we'll be seeing a lot more of her.

Once again Robert Kirkman delivers a stellar issue of post-apocalyptic aventure without zombies even being present. While I do appreciate that fact, I want them back. I know that the people that are ALIVE are the "true" walking dead, but I want to see some zombie peril. Regardless though, what little dialogue there was in this issue was as fantastic as ever and the plot seems to be moving forward at a feverish pace...Rick returns in the next issue and there are BOATS!! Ocean!

The art team knows how to do what they do best: black and white. The thing I picked up right off the bat was the meadow that Carl and Lydia were laying in, fascinating to see foliage and nature rendered in black and white. The other thing that was cool were the masks of Lydia's people because you could tell that they were zombie skin and not living tissue. I don't really know how these guys make our brains pick up the intricacies of black lines over white paper...but they do a damn fine job of it and have been for the last 138 issues. Can't wait for the next 138.

Amazing issue as always. Pick it up!
