Snake Eyes: Agent of COBRA #1
Written by: Mike Costa
Art by: Paolo Villanelli
If there's one thing that I've been liking a lot lately, it's the upsurge of quality in these GI Joe releases. This issue is no exception and it's a beautiful start to this arc. You've got most of the major players either appearing or being mentioned offhand and the action is there. In this issue we get Destro escaping with Snake Eyes' help and we get some quick cuts of home life for someone that we find out later is ver important, but I won't spoil that. It's got a good cliffhanger and some slight hints at motive.
Costa's writing is really good, like really really good. The dialogue is tight and focused, there were moment were I was very pleased with overall narrative as well. It was kind of like reading small bits and pieces of The Prince by Machiavelli. At least I think that was what he was going for. Either that or The Art of War by Sun Tzu. Whatever he was trying to convey, I got the overall gist of the message and I liked it a lot. There was little room for error and I believe that Costa hit it out of the park.
The art is gorgeous and everything you'd expect from this franchise. There were probably only a couple times I looked at something and thought "ah, that is out of the ordinary." Otherwise, everything and the settings were all masterfully drawn. Villanelli is really good at the human figure and with Snake Eyes himself, you have to be on your A-game when you're drawing him, otherwise you run the risk of making it look weird. None of that here however, every move that he made was fluid and precise. A beautiful job.
Pretty good first issue. If you're a Joe fan, pick it up.
