Annihilator #3
Written by: Grant Morrison
Art by: Frazer Irving
Alright, i'm just gonna come out and say it before you read the review: I'm giving this issue a 10/10, a perfect score. Why? Because it was as close to perfection as you can get out of a comic. I'll admit right off the bat though that I'm a bit bias because of the elements that were contained within the pages of this thunderous issue. The story is continuing at a fever pace to its inevitable conclusion with great explanations why the brain tumor exists and how Ray can get rid of it, at the same time though...they are being hunted by "the ultimate hunter" who traveled through a black hole to find Max. It's getting really good...
That said, Morrison needs a statue of himself erected somewhere in the world for this issue. The writing is like a satanic possession in the way it grabs ahold of you from the first page until the last. On top of that, the elements I was speaking about in the first paragraph were literary and linguistic ones. I was studying Dylan Thomas earlier in the day and then I came full circle when Max uttered "Rage, rage against the dying of the light." It was pretty surreal and added to the experience for sure....THEN the comic switched into Italian in between panels, and I'm studying Italian...so that was really cool! Beside my obviously Robert-centric experience of the issue, the writing was fabulous.
The art, also spectacular. I like to think that Irving was driving down the streets of Hollywood with a sketch pad and just going off of what was in front of him because it's beautifully authentic. One big thing I just started noticing in Irving's drawing is the HAIR, it flows so naturally that you'd think that it was stapled into the issue over the drawings. The panels also have an interesting color scheme, ORANGE for "Ray's world" and BLUE for "Max's world" which I feel might have been done to aid people who can't follow, but I find it easy. Everything this guy draws is lovely.
Perfect issue, highly recommended. BUY IT!!!!
