Star Wars Adventures: The Clone Wars - Battle Tales #4 Review
Writer: Michael Moreci
Artists: Derek Charm, Davide Tinto
Letterer: Jake M. Wood
Publisher: IDW
The newest installment of IDW's Battle Tales miniseries introduces us to a new set of clones in a flashback as the battle on Hisseen continues to heat up. Heater and his band of clones, labeled deserters for doubting their place in the war, agree to complete a mission to clear their names and win their freedom.
My feelings are a bit mixed on the way the issue tackles the morality of the clone army. Overall, I'm glad to see it tackled at all, since it's a very complex question with some uncomfortable implications that a lot of stories probably want to avoid as much as possible. Even when the TV show itself addressed the issue, it wasn't always done in the best way. Probably my favorite thing about how the issue handles it is how the Republic is willing to allow the clones to leave if that's what they choose to do, and the clones decide to stay of their own free will out of loyalty. It might honestly be the best way to resolve a situation like that in a comic with this tone and page count.
The rest of the issue is as enjoyable a read as the rest of the series has been. There are some funny moments and engaging battle sequences. I really liked the art style for the main story, I thought it did a particularly good job on facial designs and expressions, which is something that I don't think is always IDW's strong suit. The designs of the new clone characters were great. They were memorable and visually distinct without being too different to the point of not being recognizeable.
The main story feels like it's stalled a little bit, which surprises me because the next issue will be the final one and it seems to have a flashback story of its own. The framing story is really just a vehicle to tell the flashbacks but I hope there are enough pages left to wrap it up in a satisfying way. The next flashback story looks like it'll focus on Grievous, which is exciting. I'm looking forward to seeing how Moreci tackles that character and I'm glad this series will finally get to its intended conclusion after so many delays .
