Mirka Andolfo has crafted something special with this last issue of Mercy, which serves as much as a beginning of a story as it does a conclusion. She neatly wraps up all of the ongoing storylines, but it definitely doesn’t feel like an ending. Which is good, because the end of the issue teases a new storyline, Merciless, coming next year.

There is so much going on in this issue, and like she’s managed throughout the series, Andolfo manages to keep the reader guessing and there are twists which are guaranteed to take the reader by surprise. The ending of the issue will undoubtedly take EVERY reader by surprise. It takes a talented writer to continually take the reader by surprise and Andolfo has shown us, time and time again, that she can do this and make it look easy. If you came here expecting a predictable, by the numbers story, you are going to be sorely disappointed.

The creatures that Andolfo has crafted within this story are fantastic. Not only are they incredibly alien in appearance, but also in their actions. A species which doesn’t feel emotion the way that we do, their actions are totally alien to us as well. But merging with a human host imparts memories and emotions onto the creatures, which they are not only unaccustomed to but unprepared for. It makes their actions and the consequences of said actions ever more horrific, and by making these creatures the main characters in the story gives us a totally unique point of view. With this final issue the reader is so emotionally invested with these characters and their stories it makes for some impactful reading. If you’ve been following along with this series you won’t be disappointed, it’s a really strong, earned ending.

Not only is Andolfo an incredibly talented writer, but she’s also an insanely talented artist. All the art and colours (with a little assistance on colours) is done by her and it gives a finished comic which is exactly as she envisioned the story, no-one elses interpretation along the way. The creatures she’s created in this story are fantastic, one of the strengths of comics as a medium are the way that the only limit is the imagination of the creators, and Andolfo has such a rich imagination and she brings these creatures to life in such a vivid way. It’s absolutely stunning.

An incredible conclusion to an outstanding storyline, except it feels less like an ending and more of a beginning. Readers will look forward to these characters return in the future. Mirka Andolfo shows readers she’s not only a talented artist but also a fantastic writer, continually throwing twists into the story to shock readers, and what an emotional ending she’s crafted here.
