This issue almost had no chance to disappoint simply because of the incredible all-star team of writers and artists assigned to this series. Sonic is such a loveable character and Sonic media has potential to be just as delightful as the hedgehog himself. Fortunately for all of us, this team delivered with a fun start to an interesting story in this first issue.

I have always enjoyed the Sonic the Hedgehog series published by Archie Comics mainly because Ian Flynn did such an amazing job writing those comics. I am very happy to see him as the writer for the IDW series of the comic because I honestly can’t imagine anyone else writing these characters better. This issue is proof of this as he perfectly sets up a story that I am already interested in and excited about. He also doesn’t use this first issue to just establish a story line either. Flynn packs this issue with funny dialogue and thrilling action that definitely leaves me wanting more.

To compliment Flynn’s writing, Tracy Yardley, Jim Amash, and Bob Smith work together to create stunning action scenes throughout this first issue. It is really nice to see work from artists who have also been working on these characters along with Flynn at Archie Comics, Yardley and Amash. Throw into the mix Bob Smith who has also been an important artists for Archie Comics, and the three of them form a team that I hope continue to work on Sonic comics for as long as possible. The artwork in this issue is familiar yet fresh and very detailed.

Another member of the team from the Archie Comics Sonic the Hedgehog series is colorist Matt Herms. He is behind the colors of some of my favorite series so it is exciting to see that he is going to continue to be a part of IDW’s Sonic the Hedgehog series. We get a really great first glimpse into his work in this first issue, as the entire book looks beautiful.

This issue met my high expectations because Ian Flynn and company know how to perfect a Sonic the Hedgehog comic book. It is action-packed, heartwarming, and funny, which is everything that I wanted Sonic the Hedgehog to continue to be under IDW. This team have shown us that they will make these characters and stories enjoyable despite anything that may happen to the brand name.
