Adam Warren is continuing to show us that the Empowered universe is absolutely insane and incredibly fun. This second issue is more fun than the first, because we actually start to see Empowered and Sistah Spooky fighting through the battles the Infernal Service Provider has placed them in.

In this issue, we see the first two rooms of the hell high school that Empowered and Spooky must fight their way out of. The first room, the biology classroom, is quite an interesting battle featuring giant frogs and more gross things you’ll have to read to see. The second room is study hall, which is not as relaxing as you may think study hall is. In both rooms, we see a lot of battling and a lot of funny dialogue.

What makes this issue so fun is how absolutely ridiculous and hilarious it is. The two battles are against a few “brimstone blondes” whose weapons are very interesting and creative. Warren does a great job of making things that would seem either scary or dumb really cool and exciting. This is Carla Speed McNeil’s second issue as artist for the Empowered universe and I continue to think that she is a great fit for the series. Her artwork is so theatrical that it perfectly compliments the ridiculousness of the story and characters.

This issue is a great second issue to a spin-off miniseries featuring our beloved characters Empowered and Sistah Spooky. This issue is especially fun because we get to see some of Spooky’s past as a high school student being bullied by the blondes who later sold their souls for hotness. It is very enjoyable watching her get revenge on the bullies who tormented her in such terrible and sometimes racist ways.

Once again, Empowered fans will love this issue and new fans will love this issue along with the first as well. I think that this series will create a lot more Empowered fans and send a lot of people going back and picking up the original Empowered books.
