Get Caught Up…

Infinity is upon us.  The heroes not in space are left to defend earth against the forces of Thanos.  This includes the Superior Spider-Man and some of his Mighty Avengers, who battle Thanos’s invaders as well as a new threat.

What’s Good?

I really enjoyed the fact that the creative team did not let the Infinity aspect of the story drive all of the action.  We get plenty to remind us that this story takes place within the larger Infinity story, but Rodi gets to add his own flavors to the story, which is refreshing on a few levels.  This prevents us from having a trio of different Superior Spider-Man stories going on at once.

The story branches off from the Infinity story when Spider-Man has to investigate a super-powered disturbance while assisting the other Mighty Avengers.  Here we get a brand new character with a familiar power set - electrical manipulation.Beyond manipulation, a coed has become living electricity.  This leads to easily one of my favorite moments in Superior history, where the scientist takes over during their conversation.  It’s a great story beat that reminds us that under the mask there is a very curious scientific mind.

The writing here really feels cohesive with the main Superior Spider-Man title.  Rodi writes a great Superior Spider-Man, probably the best (aside from Slott) since the mind-swap occurred late last year.  He brings the right attitude to character.  A delicate mix of hubris and the desire to do some form of good with his abilities, in his own way, naturally.  Del Mundo’s art here is different and not something I was really expecting.  The art is very fluid.  The characters are smooth and fit in well with their surroundings.  I’d really like to see more varied camera angles, though.  It’s mixed up at points, but got monotonous in other areas.  I’m looking forward to seeing how del Mundo grows now that his first issue with the characters is out of the way.

The Verdict…

Great writing that captures the fun of Dan Slott’s Spider-World.  The art is different, but growing on me.  I’m committed to the rest of the story!

Oh, Yeah, And…

I really thought this was going to be an X-Men team-up issue since Wolverine and Beast are on the cover.  Kinda bummed with the characters we were given since it was pretty much just an issue of Mighty Avengers.
