Witch Doctor Vol. 1 : Under The Knife

by lucstclair on May 15, 2012

His name is Dr. Vincent Morrow, a unique physician who specializes in the occult & the supernatural. His methods are as odd as he is, but effective nonetheless. With the assistance of paramedic Eric Gast & the catatonic looking, helper/patient Penny Dreadful, this strange trio make the house calls nobody else can. Demonic possessions, fairies, amphibian creatures & large vampiric tapeworms are all in a day’s work. No job is too big and no patient is incurable… most of the time. So call in sick, tell your priest to hit the road & hop in the killing jar… the witch doctor will see you now!

I didn’t know much about this book, but after reading it, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s a blast. The Doc is a wonderful character, with his mad scientist look and not unlike a wizard, he can cast spells and wave his magic wand, except the spells are in the form of pills, his wand is one of those old style syringes & his scalpel is a magical sword. The horrific creatures he deals with are nothing we haven’t seen before, but the writer puts a fresh spin on them that’s different & wacky.

Written by newcomer Brandon Seifert & illustrated with a flair for the eerie & the disturbing by Lukas Ketner. If you’re a fan of Mike Mignola’s Hellboy & B.P.R.D, then this is your cup of tea. I can’t wait for volume 2. Originally published as Witch Doctor #0-#4. From Image Comics.
