Beasts of Burden : Neighborhood Watch (One-Shot)

by lucstclair on July 31, 2012

A group of cats & dogs feverishly keep an eye out on the neighbourhood’s supernatural activity, protecting their human owners from harm in the small community of Burden Hill. Presented here are 3 short stories in 1 one comic.

The Pros

It’s not often you read something original & completely different, but it’s certainly the case with Beasts Of Burden. Written by Evan Dorkin (Fun With Milk & Cheese) & illustrated by Jill Thompson (Death : At death’s door). Dorkin has a crafted 3 delightfully charming little stories about the furriest paranormal investigators ever printed in a comic. A tight knit group of cats & dogs, who sniff out the dark forces lurking in the shadows. Some stories are funny, while others are a tad frightening, but all of them are downright entertaining.

Thompson’s illustrations are full of life, with a dream-like aspect to them with stunning pastel colours.

The Outcome

I had a blast reading this as it left me with a nice warm feeling inside. If anybody ever tells you, that comics are dead, that there’s nothing original anymore, tell them to shut up and pick this comic up. They won’t regret it. Pure magic. Originally published as Beasts Of Burden short stories from Dark Horse Presents #4, #6 & #8 from Dark Horse Comics.
