Men Of War Vol. 1 : Uneasy Company (TPB)

by lucstclair on July 28, 2012

This is the story of Joseph Rock, grandson to the legendary war hero, Sgt. Rock. Plus : a compilation of short comics featuring the brave men & women of the Armed Forces and Frankenstein, Agent of S.H.A.D.E.

The Pros

Soldiers butt heads with super powered individuals in this mediocre collection of the horrors and casualties of war. The main story entitled “Uneasy Company” focuses on Joe Rock and his dangerous mission featuring super men, was an interesting enough story and “A Last, Full Measure” by John Arcudi (The Mask Omnibus Vol. 1) & illustrated by Richard Corben (Ragemoor, Creepy) was a chilling supernatural tale about the ghosts of the American Civil War.

The Cons

This is a really nice looking collection of war stories, the problem is I never showed any interest in war comics, never have and never will.

The Outcome

To be completely honest, this book bored me to tears, but if war comics are your thing, then there might be something here for you. It’s just not for me. Written by Ivan Brandon (Secret Invasion : Home Invasion) & illustrated by Tom Derenick (JLA : World Without a Justice League) & featuring stories by Jeff Lemire (Animal Man, The Nobody), Matt Kindt (Mind MGNT, Revolver), James Robinson (Starman, Earth 2) & J.T Krul (Green Arrow Vol. 1 : The Midas Touch, G.I. Combat Vol. 1 : The War That Time Forgot) & others. Originally published as Men of War #1-#8 (The New 52) from DC Comics.
