Meridien City #1 & #2

by lucstclair on July 22, 2012

In the Glisa system lies a booming metropolis called Meridien City. Its inhabitants are mostly rich, but for those who are not so fortunate, they live on the outskirts of the city in the wastelands know as “firelands” under Glisa’s scorching sun, where hyperthermia is a common occurrence. Inspector Cannon Hunter has been called on strange case where the body of a woman has been found, which she believes was murder disguised as heat stroke. The case leads her to the fireland mining district and to a secret society of people known as “firewalkers”. For Inspector Hunter, the truth of the firewalkers is more personal then she’ll ever realize and nothing will ever be the same again!

The Pros

Keeping with the tradition of stories like We’ll Remember It for You Wholesale (Total Recall) & Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (Blade Runner), comes a sci-fi story about an alien planet whose inhabitants want real changes to a corrupt government. The story also mirrors our own society with growing problems like climate changes & over population. Written by Georgia Lee & illustrated by Silvio DB (Girls Night Out & Other Stories). Lee’s story doesn’t waste any time and quickly unfolds the protagonist’s story with some mystery, dashed with a little bit of action. Fans of the Human Torch will enjoy Hunter’s transformation & fans of hard-boiled detective stories will also appreciate this style.

Sylvio DB, with the help of colorist Cabbral (Girls Night Out & Other Stories), perfectly captures the look of a futuristic monumental city with blistering landscapes & strange cultures.

The Cons

Not the most original story I’ve ever read, as it borrows heavily from other sci-fi elements, but in no way does that imply that I didn’t like it.

The Outcome

This was a fun read and I’m eager to see where it goes from here. Special thanks go to Amy Chu (Girls Night Out & Other Stories) for donating this comic. From Alpha Girl Comic.
