Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine (HC)

by lucstclair on July 06, 2012

Spider-Man & Wolverine. They have fought side by side in the past, but are not the closest of friends. But they’ll have to put aside their petty differences and actually work together to get out of this mess. In a bank robbery gone wrong, powered by magical diamonds, they’re thrust 65 million years into the past and in a world that’s about to be destroyed. Every time a world ends, our two heroes are magically whisked away to another time period. How can they defeat an enemy, when that enemy is time itself? More importantly, who’s manipulating the time stream and pulling their strings? Hold on tight, because things are about to get wild!

The Pros

A very funny, action-packed & insane story of friendship and time travel by the creative team of Jason Aaron (PunisherMax, Wolverine & The X-Men) & Adam Kubert (Ultimate X-Men Vol. 1 : The Tomorrow People, Wolverine Origin). It’s a fascinating look at the Spider-Man & Wolverine that could’ve been, should’ve been & shouldn’t be, with a twisted version of Dr. Doom, something called the Phoenix Gun and Marvel’s lamest wannabe villain you love to hate…The Orb! I won’t spoil who the man behind the curtain is, but let’s just say that I’m not surprised. Aaron whipped up a humorous and often heart-warming tale and Kubert’s illustrations shine with every page. The foldout 3-page spread of Wolverine facing off against the new & improved Dr. Doom is simply breath-taking.

The Cons

At some point during the third act, the plot kind of gets goofy and pulls you out of the story a little.

The Outcome

This is the very definition of a fun book, not to be taken seriously. Just go with it. I sure did. Originally published as Astonishing Spider-Man & Wolverine #1-#6. From Marvel Comics.
