That’s Because You’re a Robot
Written by David Quantick, Art by Shaky Kane

I’m not familiar with David Quantick.  He’s apparently a British music journalist, and I think this is his first comic. No, I came for Shaky Kane, artist extraordinaire.  Shaky Kane is way more of an artiste than a comic book pro, and his work on The Bulletproof Coffin, with David Hine, should be sought out by any comics fan.  This new piece is only one issue long, and it also comes highly recommended.
That’s Because You’re a Robot reminds me of a Robert Smigel “TV Funhouse” cartoon.  A good one, too.  Not one of the ones where they stretched a dick joke as far as it could go.  That’s Because You’re a Robot does try for a lot of mileage out of the central conceit, which is never explored in any relevant form, only brought up as a recurring gag.  Two police partners are taken aside by their superior officer one day.  He tells them that one of them is a robot, but he can’t tell them which one.  The officers bicker over who is really the robot, mess up police work, and drive ridiculous cars.  The plot is barely there, and serves mostly as a vehicle for jokes.

Speaking of vehicles, the cars these cops drive is hilarious.  Shaky Kane has come up with some incredibly illogical designs.  It seriously looks like he’s applying to be the new “Hard Boiled” artist.  The double page spreads are funny stuff too.  Shaky Kane is a man aware of how stiff his art looks.  HE’s like Michael Kupperman on a bad does of superheroes.  Pay attention to how often the cops are arranged full frontal, and pay attention to all the weird background characters Shaky Kane throws in.  This done-in-one is worth more than a few views.

This comic was great.  Best humor publication I’ve read since The Eltingville Club.  Probably the best comic I’ve reviewed since The Eltingville Cub.  Get this one.
