Superior Spider-Man #32
Writer: Dan Slott/Christos Gage
Artist: Giuseppe Camuncoli
Colorist: Antonio Fabela
Publisher: Marvel
Well… guess who’s back?
I don’t know whether it was a minority, or a surprising majority, but it goes without saying that more people ended up actually enjoying “Spock’s” escapades as Spidey than were expected following ASM #700’s tragic and maddening game changer. Well, several months after the finale to Superior Spider-Man, we finally get another taste of the old Spock magic; but as a past exploit.
Flashing back to when Horizon Labs literally imploded upon itself (SSM #19), we see that someway, somehow, Superior Spidey has made his way to 2099… while also existing in the Marvel 616 present? (This is why I love comics. Immediately putting in some work to find a passage back to the place he was before, Spock succeeds not only in making his dimensional-time portal-thingamajig, but also in stumbling upon something much MUCH larger at play… and thus Spider-Verse begins with a bang!
Slott hasn’t lost his touch with handling Spidey (or Spock, at least), and while many argue that his time is due (no comment), he at least knows his way around the character well enough to bring his characteristic ego out to the fullest, and let it shine in the wake of potential catastrophe. And let me just say this: Camuncoli’s artwork is much appreciated over Ramos’s, and helps to lend a very dynamic, yet consistent feel to character designs, as well as action sequences. This is a great starting point for what could be Marvel’s best event of 2014, and let’s hope this doesn’t act as the latest in a long line of Marvel “cash-in” events.
