X-O Manowar #37
Writer: Robert Venditti
Artist: Diego Bernard
Dead Hand has been a grand space epic that got me into the character of X-O Manowar in an instant. I’ve had my issues with my pacing of this story but Venditti has managed to create such an interesting conflict that this series has been able to hold my attention through its entire run. I didn’t know that issue #37 would be the conclusion and I’m glad that it is.
This story could’ve dragged on for another outing but this conclusion brought what I wanted from this series. There’s something so appealing about an army of armor bearers combatting the robot-slaves of a sentient Death Star. Unfortunately, though Robert Venditti doesn’t truly make us feel that our heroes are facing insurmountable odds. There’s never much urgency to this book because the armor bearers are clearly going to win throughout the entire battle. It’s fun to watch the huge battle but it could’ve been much stronger if the antagonists were more imposing.
Diego Bernard’s art is definitely strong in this issue despite a few off panels. Some of his faces could get a little rushed and they were inconsistent throughout the issue but that’s nitpicking when the artist draws such great looking action.
All in all, this was a strong closer for Dead Hand that gave us an epic battle which on the downside felt too easy for our heroes. With this issue Dead Hand proved that it is the epic story you would expect when the antagonist is a sentient Death Star.
