Section 8 #1

Writer: Garth Ennis
Artist: John McCrea

Garth Ennis is a writer that I have tremendous respect for and the news of his return to DC and Marvel had me ecstatic. His Marvel book was a delightful surprise and made me even more excited for his new DC title, Section 8. The decent reviews I read yesterday made me a little nervous for this book and unfortunately my concerns became a reality. Section 8 has a great zany tone to it, but the final product is too choppy to make up for that.

The main issue I had here was a rather unnecessary and clunky Batman appearance. The comic was setting up to be a weird story about an underdog team of people led by an overweight alcoholic. The lack of a plot held the book back from being great but I was enjoying my read nonetheless. Then Batman showed up and the comic just lost its steam. It would’ve been too great of a juxtaposition if Batman were to have acted like Batman in this book and that makes me question why Ennis put the character in. His characterization wasn’t excellent as he comes off as a bit of a pouty brat who lets himself get cornered by a racism accusation. I wasn’t a fan of Ennis’ Batman and that dragged the latter half of this issue down tremendously.

John Mccrea’s art is certainly a great fit for this book. He portrays Ennis’ over-the-top scenes perfectly and captures the weirdness of this book quite well. His art was definitely the standout of this issue and if I come back for the sophomore outing it’ll mostly be because of him.

Section 8 is a book that needs to be written by Garth Ennis. It’s odd, over-the-top and most importantly, extremely unique. Unfortunately these strong elements aren’t enough to compensate for an overall clunky script that would’ve been great, with a little bit of cleanup. This title has potential for a great future, but for now, I’m still questioning whether I’ll be there to read it.
