New Avengers #32

Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: Mike Deodato

New Avengers under Jonathan Hickman has been one crazy ride. He’s filled it with moral dilemmas for the ages, grand scale and incredible characterizations. His wonderful series is coming to an end in its next issue, making issue #32 the penultimate one. And it truly felt like Hickman is wrapping up this storyline before the Secret Wars break out. Gladly, this chapter greatly succeeds in establishing just how powerful the Beyonders are while giving us an emotion farewell to some of Hickman’s characters.

Every issue of New Avengers has been visiting different conflicts for a while and this one takes us to the Multiversal Avengers’ war with the Ivory Kings.  Through this, Hickman begins to hint at what has caused the untimely end of the multiverse. He’s beginning to imply at the origins of the incursions without going too in-depth. I liked the suggestions in this issue because they were vague enough to keep the mystery going while being specific enough to prompt a lot of theories. I’ve been waiting for the origin of the incursions for 3 years and I’m glad that Hickman is showing us that the wait is almost up.

In New Avengers #30, Hickman showed Hank Pym traveling through the multiverse and meeting the Beyonders, essentially establishing them as the main threat of this book. Even though they were menacing (they killed the Living Tribunal) he didn’t take the time to show them first hand. Thankfully, Hickman gives them their time to shine in this issue as they tear the Multiversal Avengers apart. Through this issue alone, the Beyonders have established themselves as an incredible threat. Menacing, cold and powerful they will play of antagonist extremely well. Unfortunately we only get hints as to what is driving them to destroy the multiverse, but I’m eager for Hickman to delve into those reasons.

And as the Beyonders wreak havoc, Hickman gives an incredible send-off to many of the characters he has brought into the Avengers. Nightmask, Abyss and Starband all find their characters arcs coming full circle. In the face of an immeasurable threat, they proved themselves to Avengers and fought with all that they could. However, the peak of character work came from the relationship between Hypierion and Thor. Hickman portrays their friendship very well, here and gives them both individual moments to shine as well as moments to shine as a duo. These two grew a great bond over the course of this series and it was awesome to watch them fight the Beyonders alongside each other.

Unfortunately this series’ art has suffered from being extremely inconsistent throughout its final sprint. This issue has Mike Deodato return to duties, who is my favourite artist of the bunch. His pencils are dark, conveying Hickman bleak and dire tone perfectly and extremely detailed. He puts great effort into each page and this issue boasts that through its fantastic action sequences and cool character designs. I’m hoping Mike Deodato will be back for the final issue but that isn’t probable considering the imminent release.

New Avengers is coming to a close. I’ll dearly miss this book once it’s done but Hickman is ending the book at the top of its game. Issue #32 provides a true introduction to the threat that is the Beyonders but it doesn’t forget to give us strong character beats for everyone included in the issue. This felt like a penultimate issue as Hickman has begun racing to the finish. This is the payoff we were waiting for and it’s awesome!
