Ant-Man #3

by Kalem Lalonde on March 15, 2015

Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Ramon Rosanas

Ant-Man started 2015 off with one the best debuts in recent memory. It was funny, heartfelt and all-around fun to read. I never really thought that the series would go beyond the quality of its first issue. Until I read Ant-Man #3. This issue is a contender for my favourite comic of 2015 so far.

Nick Spencer is such an excellent comedic writer and he has found the perfect tone for this series. He shows us that we don’t need to take Ant-Man seriously and that’s the main appeal to this comic. We’re following an underdog character who is trying to be a hero. Arguably, Scott Lang isn’t even a superhero in this comic, he’s just a Dad who loves his daughter and wants to succeed in life. This is what makes this book so compelling beyond its charm. It’s about a man who just wants to provide for his daughter and be a good dad. At the core, this is a very heartfelt story.

But if you put aside the emotions, you still have an incredible comic. Ant-Man is the funniest ongoing series right now. One joke in this issue made me laugh for 2 consecutive comics. I’ve never laughed so much from a comic. Nick Spencer’s sense of humour is accessible and clever. It brings this series to life in a way that no other writer could.

Though, the comic still wouldn’t be the same without Ramon Rosanas. His style is perfect for this book and I can feel the close collaboration between these two creators. Rosanas clean Samnee-esque style can evoke the heart of this series and the comedy perfectly. I’m hoping he stays on board for a long time.

You would be hard pressed to find a comic more enjoyable than Ant-Man. I’m calling it right now, this is going to be an iconic Ant-Man run and maybe even the definitive one. Ant-Man #3 succeeds with every page and every panel. If you like comics, you owe it to yourself to pick up this series, it’s that good.
