Descender #1

Writer: Jeff Lemire
Artist: Dustin Nguyen

Jeff Lemire is a creator that generates instant interest and anticipation. Every time I hear of a new Lemire comic, I’m always interested even if I’m not a fan of the premise of the book. But when I heard of Descender, I didn’t even want to know the premise. The cover that was revealed was so captivating and the notion that Lemire would be teaming up with Dustin Nguyen made it all the better. And with great anticipation, came great payoff. Descender #1 could be Image’s next big space adventure if Lemire can live up to the premise of this story and its amazing first issue.

Descender opens with a catalytic event taking place 10 years before the ongoing story and right off the bat I saw just how detailed this universe is. Lemire has evidently put a lot of thought into creating this universe which is something I’m a sucker for. Books with good world-building are books I’m prone to loving. This is a story where humans have evolved past earth and have seemingly colonised the universe. Lemire has crafter 9 different principle worlds and even put a brief description of each of them at the end of this issue.

This sort of imagination is exactly why I think this series is going to be the next big space adventure in comics. Lemire paves the way for a crazy adventure around the universe with his cliffhanger here. And I’m genuinely eager to explore the different planets of this universe and delve deep into Lemire’s vivid imagination.

To bolster his already great comics, Lemire creates great characters to lead us through the upcoming adventure and give the story an emotional anchor. We are introduced to our great lead character here, Tim-21. Tim-21 is the central character of the story, the last robot of his kind alive in the universe. Lemire is able to create that amazing dilemma of a character who is alone in the universe and make him endearing as he does it. Tim is an innocent little boy who is just searching for his family. Unfortunately, he’s going to get swept up into this tragedy that befell his universe 10 years prior but that’ll definitely make for an interesting coming of age story.

Dustin Nguyen is definitely an artist that I’ve liked for a while now. His work on Batman Eternal was a saving grace for his issues. I loved the notion of Nguyen drawing space but I had never imagined it being like this. Nguyen has completely changed his style up for Descender, resulting in a hauntingly beautiful issue. His style is reminiscent of Ray Fawkes, with more detail and an overall better feel. His alien designs are out of this world and his robots attackers are grand and imposing. He brings Lemire’s imagination to life wonderfully while reinventing himself as an artist.

Descender #1 begins Lemire’s next indie-title fantastically. This is a comic created by a man with great imagination and a keen sense of the human spirit. Lemire has set-up an adventure through space that will surely captivate all readers who love the genre. And if Lemire’s writing isn’t enough, you’ll also have Dustin Nguyen’s incredible pencils to make the journey even greater. This story has mountains of potential and I don’t doubt that Lemire will live up to that potential in the future.
