Justice League #38
Writer: Geoff Johns
Artist: Jason Fabok
Geoff Johns’ Justice League run hit its stride in 2014 despite the artistic inconsistencies and shipping delays. Johns simply started playing to his strengths more by adding Captain Cold and Lex Luthor into the mix. It’s been a title full of chicanery, distrust and tension ever since Lex showed interest in joining the League. With this momentum, Johns decided to hire an ongoing artist in the form of Jason Fabok for his best storyline yet, “The Amazo Virus”.
Justice League #38 is an issue that provides a few answers about the epidemic but keeps the ongoing sense of mystery that has made this arc so intriguing. I love the sense of urgency that has come with this virus storyline. I can practically feel the pressure on the hero’s backs. The scale of the story is set to world-wide which a Justice League book can benefit from greatly (even though most of the League has been absent for this arc).
Though despite being titled “Justice League”, this book feels awfully like a Lex Luthor title. He’s the center of attention again as Johns begins to explore his darker side. In a great scene with Superman, Lex reveals the origin of the virus and it’s very Luthor-esque while making perfect sense. His patience is thinning and watching the wall of ice crack is extremely entertaining. The fate of world is depending on Lex Luthor and he seems to be handling it rather poorly for a man who idolizes himself as a god among men.
Jason Fabok returns on art duties and I don’t think that disliking his art is humanly possible. His character designs are flawless, his paneling is dynamic and his action feels energetic and moving. Geoff Johns did a perfect job selection an artist, I want him to stay with Johns forever!
Justice League #38 was a solid character piece for Lex Luthor and a great pandemic story. Geoff Johns is always at his best when working with complex villain and this comic is no exception. Johns is creating one of the best Lex Luthor stories of all time with a storyline that no DC fan should miss out on.
