There is nothing more joyful than this book.

Some of the best Marvel books of recent have involved a healthy dose of humor. Whether it's certain issues of Matt Fraction's “Hawkeye” or Nick Spencer's “The Superior Foes of Spider-Man”, some of my favorite issues have involved comedy and a lot of heart. “The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl falls under this branch of books with one of my favorite issues of the year (I know, it's only February...).

It's still Doreen Green's first day of college and she can barely talk to Tomas, her new crush. But a new crush and embarrassment are the least of her problems; Galactus is on his way to destroy Earth and only she can stop him. Now she has to figure out meet Galactus on the moon before he gets to Earth and gobbles it up. A large part of the issue dedicated to Doreen finding a mode of transportation to the moon and what follows is pure awesomeness.

It's almost joke-after-joke with this issue and I wouldn't have it any other way. I won't dare spoil any of them, but all you have to do is look at the cover in order to have a hint of what might happen. Everything is punctuated by the jokes the artist Erica Henderson injects into the background of Ryan North's scripts. Some people may not like the art, but it's the same situation She-Hulk is in. The art might take some getting used to, but it's really good once you've opened up to it and accepted that this is not your run-of-the-mill comic book art. I smiled at almost every expression Doreen, Tomas and her new roommate Nancy.

If you like fun, happiness, and smiling, you should give this book a chance. It's only two issues in and not too late to hop into the hilarity this team is delivering.
