Aquaman #31
What do you do when you’re challenged by a force of nature? You could give in or you can do like the great Aquaman and sick alligators on it. Which would you pick?
Aquaman #31 is a team up that should have been done a long time ago it’s like those old brave and the bolds back in the day a great team up that makes complete sense, land and water elements of the earth teaming up. In this issue Swamp thing and Aquaman team up to uncover a great conspiracy that is building up beneath them.
The Good
Jeff Parker is doing a great job of fleshing out the Aquaman universe including the Others and having Mera continue to be a big part of the book is a step in the right direction. I have to say that Swamp Thing is one of my favorite characters and so is Aquaman. I have as a fan of comic books have been waiting for this team up because it just made so much sense, Why would the being Swamp Thing that is responsible for all of the plant life and the king of the water Aquaman never come into contact? So this book had a lot to live up to for me. I must say it lived up to all of my expectations the fight between Aquaman and Swamp Thing was straight up badass, but it wasn’t one side it was logical and thought out and for their first encounter it was a memorable one. The second half of the story was Mera investigating her assassination attempt she goes down the deep trenches of Atlantis and discovers who is trying to kill her and she ends up battling them and holding her own. That is what I love about Mera she doesn’t need Aquaman to save her she is never a damsel in distress. I would love to see a solo Mera book that would be great. Also the art is top notch Paul Pelletier draws a fearsome Swamp Thing and a beautiful Atlantis. Paul and Jeff make a great team.
Overall
Aquaman #31 is a team up that I have been waiting to see for a long time. It has lived up to all my nerd fantasies as to what would happen if Swamp Thing went toe to toe with Aquaman and boy did it deliver. As always Paul Pelletier delivers great art to a great story this is becoming one of the best Aquaman runs of all time.
