Finally we have a face to put to the name, and it only goes to make the Kindred all the more menacing. As the league divides it forces to combat this invader on all fronts, Batman is tasked with the most difficult job of all… dealing with Lois Lane Kent. Despite the ever-helpful assistance of boomtubes, mysterious wormholes, and a still, for whatever reason, mistrusted Superman will it be enough for the League to overcome this threat? Will this be the last hurrah for the team as we know it? The answers of course are yes and no, but it will be exciting nonetheless to see how this is resolved.
The issue opens with the Kindred, now in their physical form, stomping all over whatever they so choose. Even a strike from Zeus’ lightning bolt is not enough to slow them down, although it does result in the addition of everyone’s favorite Amazon princess to the collective. With all the trouble on earth clearly out of the League’s depth, the two Green Lanterns are sent out into deep space to investigate the origin of those bug filled meteorites that we saw strike Gotham a few issues ago, so of course, that means it’s blasting time. Although this is all very exciting, it does not do much to advance the story but thankfully Bryan Hitch has us covered with the addition of the entire Kent family. We know that when things get out of control the only person to turn to is Superman, and as this Man of Steel prepares to journey to center of the earth we finally get to see how he will be presented in this series. Even though he has been in every issue thus far, he hasn’t exactly been present on account of the League still not trusting him, for whatever reason. In a few lines of dialogue Hitch makes it clear that this Superman will be classic good guy that we have come to expect, the kind that will risk his life when the fate of the world hangs in the balance and the kind that loves his family above all. I am glad that he is finally mixing with the rest of the League members because his nobility is something that has been missing from their dynamic.
Bryan Hitch and Tony S. Daniel outdo themselves in this issue. How Hitch presents each League member tells me that he has finally found the voice of the individuals and that although this is a team book, it will not be written at the expense of each character. Daniel’s art is nothing short of top notch, and beyond the high expectations that he has set for himself. With the story finally taking off in issue #3, it seems that Hitch is now writing at a level that we all know he is capable of and what made the announcement that he would be helming this book so exciting.
