Ninjak #17
Ninjak #17
Written by Matt Kindt
Main Story Art by: Diego Bernard w/Allison Rodriguez
Back up Story Art by: Andres Guinaldo
published by Valiant Comics
This issue is part four and the finale of the Siege on King's Castle story. Colin King, Ninjak has had his wealth, his allies and his tech stripped away from him by what we have learned is Roku one of the deadly Shadow Seven, one of the few members still in wild. We learn the origin of Roku in this issue, finally answering a lot of questions raised in both the main story and the back up feature. Some series spanning fan theories have been confirmed, but I won't say which ones. Colin King is finally face to face with Roku who has taken prisoner his biological father, Alain who King knows as his butler. Roku explains to Ninjak who she is, which is who I suspected from the first appearance. Roku goes through her origin how she became Roku and a member of the Shadow Seven. The back up story follows Colin King's parents as they leave the intelligence field and settle into a boring normal life where they both seem bitter and to hate each other. They live out their boring lives in Venezuela, until the back up feature once again runs into the main story. I love that Matt Kindt does this, as it makes these Lost Files an important read.
I read everything that Valiant publishes so I have a pretty good sample of Matt Kindt's writing each month. Currently he is writing 3 books Ninjak, Rai and the 4001 AD summer event. Since Rai and 4001 is the summer's event its easy for Ninjak to be pushed to the background, but it would be a shame if it was since its a great book. The stories are kind of reminding me of the O'Neil/Adams run on Batman.
The art in both the main story and the back up were well done this month. Diego Bernard's style lends well to this book. It's not a book that would mesh well with a cartoony art style, so he's a perfect fit. Andres Guinaldo's art in the back up feature is in a similar vein, but a bit different. Sometimes the change of artist from the main story to the back up can be jarring, but it was smooth with this one.
I liked the way the Siege on King's Castle story wrapped up, still there a couple threads to take us into the next arc, like is Colin King still rich? Is Ninjak still working for MI-6? What's up with him and Livewire? These questions aren't addressed so we wait for issue 18 I guess. Also the ending will need to be addressed at some point. What happened to that thing that I don't want to spoil.
