The second chapter in the Divinity story opens with this first issue. In the first mini series Matt Kindt crafted an engaging Sci-Fi story that followed the mission of three ill-fated cosmonaut, while lost in they encounter something called the unknown. One of the three Abram Adams came into direct contact with the Unknown and it gave him his abilities that allow him to bend time, matter and space. Adams returns to Earth and becomes known as Divinity. Now in this first issue of the sequel we follow what happened to the other two remaining cosmonauts. Valentina Volkov, who we are told was the first woman in space, is the lead character in this issue. Volkov or Myshka as she is called is a driven cold, calculating nationalistic woman. She puts her Russia and her mission above everything. She is stranded on the planet of the Unknown, or is the planet the unknown? Its not really made clear where she and her fellow cosmonaut Kazmir are exactly. Volkov exposes herself to the Unknown and gains powers. The main story is complimented by flashback scenes showing Volkov's tough life growing up under the care of the "Doctor", then her selection to the mission, and then finally her training. We see her return home to modern day Earth, and on the final page we get the reveal of the biggest super villain in comics.
The issue came together nicely. The first series was a unique Sci fi story and was quite enjoyable, this one answers the main question we had at the end of the last story. We get to meet the other cosmonauts and we get another strong female character. This is something Valiant has down well. After this one it seems to be setting up Valentina Volkov to be a villanous version of the original Divinity, as she is dedicated to her Soviet cause. She's a serious character not smiling even in a single panel. The art and colour were well done. The colours seem very distinct to this part of the Valiant universe, and the pages from this book might be easily identifiable even with a single panel because of it. Not a criticism of the book its self, but the cover to my copy is nice and all, why doesn't the person on the front look like the woman in the story?
The story was well written and flowed nicely to the conclusion. It is the opener so I am not sure where this one is going yet, but Matt Kindt on Valiant books has not let me down. There was a lot to unpack in this issue and there will probably a lot more to come next month.
