New Super-Man #13
Writer: Gene Luen Yang
Artist: Billy Tan
Inker: Haining
Colourist: Gadson
Letterer: Dave Sharpe
This was yet another enjoyable issue that mostly served as a spring board for the new arc. We got a lot of recap and little new information, but I'm excited for the story going forward and Gene Luen Yang's fresh storytelling always grabs me.
I do have to say, however, that this issue's cover is incredibly misleading and frankly very offensive, as literally nothing on the cover takes place in the issue. This isn't a spoiler, but more of a warning. I understand that this book's sales aren't the greatest, but the constant recap we get in DC's books is enough; hopefully covers aren't going to be misleading to generate sales. Batman and Harley Quinn, two of the most popular characters right now at DC, are on the cover and do not appear here. It's disgraceful.
Aside from the cover, the art is fantastic. Billy Tan is such a good fit for the book and I love his design for Super-Man Zero. It's menacing but also dripping with detail and awesomeness. His characters are very expressive which is always a win in my book, and Gadson's colouring work makes the book pop.
I wouldn't say you should skip this issue, because you shouldn't, but not much happens aside from the nice teaser ending. Tan's art is as good as ever and Super-Man's character development remains the major draw of this book for me.
