The Amazing Spider-Man #51.LR Review

by Harlan Ivester on November 04, 2020

Writer: Nick Spencer
Artist: Federico Vicentini
Colorist: Marcio Menyz
Letterer: VC’s Ariana Maher
Publisher: Marvel Comics

The new LR issue of Spencer’s Spider-Man saga is more focused on setting up the plot, rather than building the tension like the main book is doing. So this is a fairly important one. It mostly handles the aftermath of the Sins Rising arc, and I’m glad to see that that wasn’t entirely dropped with its completion. What it sets up with those elements, though, leaves me a little worried. I’m beginning to think that this arc is just getting too bloated, with the revealed involvement of this other Spider-Man character. Spencer does make time for MJ to reflect on how she’s grown as a character, but, without getting into spoilers, it feels like he immediately contradicts that with her reaction to something after her moment of reflection. It could be argued that the circumstances were out of her control, but I don’t know.

I absolutely loved art in this story. Vicentini could be the main artist on ASM and I would be a happy reader. His characters are such a joy to look at. They’re very emotional and distinguished. However, some of the action sequences were a little hard to follow for me. I think with a little breathing room, they would have been easier to digest. Menyz’s colors are awesome. So much to find in every page. One splash in particular makes New York feel so lively.

As usual, this .LR issue is really required reading for Spencer’s Spider-Man story. Thankfully, it’s worth the price of admission. There are some questionable or concerning elements, but the ride is enjoyable especially thanks to fantastic art from Vicentini and Menyz. Give this a read.
