Neverboy #1
Writer: Shaun Simon
Artist: Tyler Jenkins
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
Release Date: March 4, 2015
Cover Price: $3.99
Made of equal parts genius and confusion, Neverboy #1 is a fun but frustrating introduction to the new Dark Horse book that is more than it appears.
Neverboy himself, even, is more than he appears, that’s apparent from the very first few pages. Who is he? WHAT is he? Why is he important? These are all questions that I’m sure have answers, they’re questions that demand them, too. Here though, these creators play cat and mouse with them to both good and head scratchily dense effect.
By the issue’s end, after a journey through psychedelic colors and empathetic, earnest characterization, we see why it’s such a big deal and all the confusing plotting earlier on makes sense even if it was hard to get through.
It’s a book that relies heavily on a twist. Once that twist is revealed, the whole thing ends really abruptly. Less like cliffhanger and more like a road block but it’s got my attention enough to hold off til the next issue before I pass any real judgment on it.
