Saga #28

Saga has always had a wicked sense of humor, and despite all the drama that occurs it should always maintain that humor. Issue #28 is a testament to that. It's opening and closing pages both elicited deep laughs from me, and sandwiched in the middle was all of the drama we expect to follow from a story about a family trying to stay togther in the midst of interplanetary war. With the funny ha-ha's still intact, the real meat of the story is in the drama. Dengo's actions are coming to a head and he might have to pay the consequences for his actions. As more is slowly revealed about the revolutionaries, the more it seems that they're not as friendly as once thought.

The story moves at brisk pace, splitting time up between Alana, Marko and Sophie's crews. The pacing is fast and rarely do we dwell on anything, but these pages are packed with tiny tidbits of info that will play out in interesting ways. For example, The Brand's real name (Sophie) is mentioned and we get young Sophie's reaction to that, but that's all. Obviously this will be explored, because it's an interesting trip into The Will's psyche and keeps that character fully alive despite his current comatose state.

On the subject of jokes again, it also ties in with Fiona Staples' art. The first and last pages of this issue might be some of my favorite work that Staples' has done. On the first page, her composition is soft and idyllic leading up to a punchline joke that is usually considered a hotbed of vitriolic discussion. Then her last page is just a total blast that you'd see on some stoner's wall in college. Staples' continues to impress in a variety of ways.

Saga, unsuprisingly, continues to be one of the best books on the market. Filled with humor, heart, and drama, it's a definite must-buy.
