The horrors of war...it's a phrase that's commonly used to describe just how awful war is (there isn't a fluffy rainbow unicorn war going on somewhere is there?). But rarely do you see someone take that in a literal sense combining the horror genre with war. This is, in it's most basic description, what Burning Fields is about. It's a political thriller with a dose of horror thrown in for good measure. Writers Michael Moreci & Tim Daniel deliver a kick to the teeth in terms of what they present and how they present it. The writing duo doesn't hold back their feelings on certain recent political movements over in the Middle East. It's unsettling, not just because of the horror genre. It's unsettling because while this is obviously fictionalized, there are elements of truth here that the story is based upon. When you're done reading this first issue, you should feel a little raw.

The art is effective and engrossing. It immediately reminded me of Michael Lark's work on Gotham Central. It's moody and atmospheric creating a building on a sense of dread that travels from Chicago to Iraq. While the locations might change the tone follows the story which is important. On top of establishing an excellent mood through the pencils, inks, and colors. The page layouts and compositions are interesting and refreshing. Using an entire half of a page to show Dana being grabbed from behind was thrilling and caught me off guard.

Burning Fields is off to a great start from a talented team that deserves some recognition. Check it out if you like action, political thrills, and a sinking feeling in your stomach,
