The Amazing Spider-Man #11
I've said I've been loving this event before, right?
Spider-Verse continues to chug along with surprising depth in every issue (whether tie-ins or not). This issue is part 3 of 5 for the major storyline so if you planned on reading this event, this isn't a particularly good place to jump on. This issue starts abruptly, just like how the last issue ended abruptly. Clearly, this was where they had to split it due to page constraint, and it doesn't read terribly, but if they could have scooted it back like 5 more pages it would've been much better.
Regardless of that minor nitpick, the rest of the story reads great. It's fun to see Otto and Peter interact again, although it's a little heartbreaking to know that Otto still thinks he's going to win out in the end against Peter. Hopefully we'll be able to see a big emotionally resonant moment between the two of them later on, although I don't know if that's possible since Otto's major character growth occurs near the end of Superior Spider-Man (which will take place after Spider-Verse occurs for Otto. Confusing, yeah?). Continuing on, we finally get to see the mack daddy of the Inheritors. Solus is incredibly intimidating in his design, and it was exciting to see him duke it out with one of the most powerful Spider-Men ever.
As exciting as the writing is, this issue wouldn't work as well as it does if Oliver Coipel wasn't doing the art. Thank the Marvel gods for wrangling him up for this event. He lends a gravitas to the event that I just don't think would have been there if they had used series regular, Humberto Ramos. I love the way Coipel draws Peter. He looks somewhat dopey, yet still cool and somewhat good-looking. For a long time, Peter's changed into a much better looking version of himself, so it was kind of nice to see him look a little more like the nerd he once was.
Overall, this was another great issue of Spider-Verse. I might actually stick around once this event is over.
