Supergirl #34
Written by: Tony Bedard
Art by: Karl Moline, Jose Marzan Jr., & Hi-Fi
Superman: Doomed has been a fickle sort of crossover event. When it's been hot it's been an absolute blast, but when it hasn't it's been sorry dreck. Unfortunately, Supergirl #34 is the latter. It's unfortunate because this is obviously a very good team with both solid writing and art. But due to editorial mandates, there's really only so much you can do.
This is a pointless issue to say the least. Having hardly anything to do with the actual event, the story flounders around Supergirl recapping previous events from Doomed as well as her own book. There's also a bizarre and extremely forced love story that doesn't make sense. I mean it's sweet, but it doesn't feel real or earned.
Not to mention a bizarre ending that seems like it should continue on in the next Supergirl issue or some other Doomed issue, but we're given no inkling of that. It just mentions the Futures End issue up next. This whole issue was just weirdly off-putting.
None of this is Tony Bedard's fault really. There's just not much that can be done with this story. If anything, he did get me somewhat interested in reading more of his run on Supergirl, because potentially it could be a fun run under his control. I really enjoyed his Blue Beetle run at the beginning of the New 52.
The art team does a solid job. I particularly enjoyed the cartoonish aspect of it. It's a shame that good art like this had to be wasted on an issue as unimportant as this.
This issue is a prime example of a bad tie-in. It doesn't really do anything at all to advance the Doomed story, or it's own characters.
