The Life After #1

For the first 2/3rds of this book I was confused. For the last third I was impressed. It’s a concept I’ve seen before, but this could potentially be done very well and in a very interesting way. Writer Joshua Hale Fialkov is smart to change things up just enough so that this story isn’t a re-hash. For those interested in it, but aren’t sure what it’s like, here’s the best one sentence description I could give: It’s like Wristcutters meets Cabin In the Woods. Luckily, the concept is interesting enough because as of now, the main character’s personality isn’t.

This issue requires a lot of setup for the world and the twist, it unfortunately does that for the sake of character and unfortunately we are left with a cardboard cut-out…for now. I don’t consider this a flaw of the books because there is only so much that can be in such a short amount of space. The art and coloring is solid, but the real treat by artist, Gabo are the page layouts. The pages are breathtakingly constructed, specifically a two page spread right at the beginning of the book.

With a solid start The Life After is going to be an intriguing series that I recommend picking up.
