Superior Foes of Spider-Man #13

Written by: Nick Spencer
Pencils by: Steve Lieber
Colors by: Rachelle Rosenberg

Regardless of its lax shipping schedule (and two on-off filler issues that weren’t very good, or made by the original creative team) Superior Foes of Spider-Man is the best thing that Marvel is currently putting out. It’s funny, heartfelt, and surprisingly dramatic for a series that follows the mishaps of a bunch of C-List Spider-Man villains. Seriously, this book has made Shocker one of my favorite Marvel characters now.

Nick Spencer is creating a comedy-crime epic here that can easily go against other mob story classics. With a unique cast, use of almost entirely non A-listers, Spencer has created a tantalizing book that always leaves me wanting more.

However, even considering the great writing this wouldn’t be the Superior Foes that I love without Steve Lieber and Rachelle Rosenberg's art. This issue really showcases their abilities with some of their best work to date, there is a full page panel that I immediately wanted framed and in my study. It's hard to describe their style, except that it's perfectly unfit for a crime story.

The only gripe I have about this book is that it got named during the “Superior” hype at Marvel. I could really have used a better name.

Regardless, Superior Foes hits the right chords consistently and as loud as possible. It’s hard to make comics better than this.
