Anytime Batman blows fire into a lion’s face I’m game.
Snyder’s Batman run has in many ways been an amazing Batman run. It’s bombastic, but intimate. It walks a tightrope between over the top and personal that isn’t really common in many comics today. Some of the best moments in Zero Year have been the flashbacks to a younger Bruce struggling with key moments in his life, but these intimate moments mean so much more when contrasted with the blockbuster moments around them. Snyder, Capullo, Miki, and Plascencia are working in tandem to provide heart stopping moments where intense personal moments occur just as pulse-pounding action is happening. It’s really flabbergasting how they’ve been able to maintain this kind of intensity for 31 issues now.
This is partly due to the chaos Snyder’s brought to Gotham. We’ve seen unknown and new threats that will likely become classics in time, to the veritable classic be transformed into something even more horrifying and lovely. Now Zero Year has stormed the gates. Riddler is being used to his fullest as an egotistical, giant screened, jerk-off. It’s a brilliant three part arc that has just been ramping up more and more as it goes.
Speaking of ramping up, the art team continues to impress. Every issue brings a new surprise. Capullo and Miki create some of the most lively art in comics today, but their art wouldn’t be nearly as good if it wasn’t for the master of color, FCO Plascencia. Seriously, this team deserves all of the awards.
Zero Year barrels towards its conclusions with only two issues left. Anyone who’s a fan of a rip-roaring good time should be reading this. Get off the internet and read it now.
