Batman #17
Writer: Tom King
Artist: David Finch
Colourist: Jordie Bellaire
Publisher: DC Comics
With Tom King’s Batman, much like everyone I have been up and down on this book, but mostly down. However this new I am Bane arc has been what everyone has really been waiting for with respect to Tom King’s Batman. I was extremely weary of how he would write Bane as he was alright in I am Suicide but this is truly Bane.
Bane is probably my favourite Batman villain other than the Joker. However with Bane in many iterations, just because he is a huge character he is often written as dumb or mindless, but what was really great about his character is he was calculating. He was literally the Reverse Flash to Barry Allen’s Flash or Black Adam to Captain Marvel, he was like reverse Batman. Although I do know some may say that is Deathstroke instead.
In the last issue we really saw Batman’s play of defense against Bane, he tried getting the Bat-family and Catwoman safe from the grasps of Bane. So now we are seeing Bane play offense against Batman, which really adds a sort of Chess element to the book, which is interesting. Another great thing is seeing Batman using all his resources to make his play, such as using Superman to keep the Robin’s safe, or Alfred breaking into Arkham Asylum with Gotham Girl.
How this arc will progress will hopefully be really strong, as it’s had such a strong beginning. Most people really want Tom King’s Batman to be so stong and it’s had a really shaky start but hopefully it will just continue strong.
