Art and Writing was done by various DC artist and writing students.

This is a collection of short stories so each paragraph is going to be a review of each story, regarding story, writing and art. I would like to say that I thought most of the stories the stories were really good and I do believe that these stories take place out of continuity. I’m not so sure however if these stories will be continuing.

John Constantine is a character who is known for the fact that he is arrogant and selfish, so to see him in a relationship, it is an interesting choice and with Zatanna no less. Zatanna is one of my favourite female character in the DC universe, so it is great to see her pop up. The story basically follows Constantine as he tries to get Zatara’s soul back for Zatanna. It basically tries to show Constantine in a sympathetic light. The art was good, especially the use of smudged in the background, especially in the flashback.

This Wonder Woman story was literally just Wonder Woman fighting monsters and seemed to set up a new mysterious villain. However there was a surprise of the Flash appearing and in this story it is surprisingly Wally, which makes me think that there is a continuation happening soon, that is unannounced and this is out of continuity. I don’t really think there was much of a story to judge, it was just Diana and Wally fighting and having banter between each other. I didn’t think this was bad, but didn’t think it was good, but I didn’t like how Diana didn’t want any help, as this doesn’t seem like her character. Although I had criticisms of the story the art was really good and I think this is definitely one of my most favourite ways to see Wonder Woman drawn, she was drawn in a manga kinda style, which is interesting.

Kyle Rayner has gone from the Omega Men back to the Green Lantern corps and this was released just as he is re-joining. Although I am not a fan of the Kyle/Carol relationship and prefer Hal/Carol it was really funny to see Kyle, contemplate about whether Carol was pregnant. Although similar to the previous issue, it was mainly just fighting with set up for a villain, but I think the dialogue was so much better. The art in the first part with the villain, I wasn’t a fan, because of the fact that I felt the bodies looked distorted but the art in the second part was much better.

One thing I do really like about this is that it brings characters that haven’t really be used to be used, and here we have Hawkgirl as a detective. It was interesting to see the process, of her trying to find out what happened. The time jump between when she puts the gun in the secret room and the final page, left me wanting to know what actually happened. The art on the other hand I really didn’t like the art which looked like it was drawn with crayons, which is an art style that some may like, but I personally wasn’t a fan.

Deadman to me seems like a cool character, but just is a character that always just seems depressed, which makes me not really like stories with him in it. This was better than most I’ve seen but still had the depressing atmosphere, but I did think it was interesting to delve into his history that most people don’t know. The art had people’s bodies distorted, but the general art wasn’t bad, especially the environment.

I don’t know much about Cassie so I personally did feel that this book required you to know a bit about her, especially what happened to her boyfriend. The book did do a good job of giving some context to her situation. I would say it does make me want to know more and see if there is a book that explores this outside of this. The art was really good and I would say probably the best other than the Superman story and the first Wonder Woman story.

This story was different because we got to see two people who would almost never really interact or meet. To see Catwoman being employed by Wonder Woman to infiltrate Themyscira. The story was more of a set up towards setting up the villain who seems to be Zeus. The art is similar to Nicola Scott, which I can see in how Diana is drawn, which shows potential in the work of this new artist.

Now this story was interesting as it does lend itself to the mystery with the Joker, so I have no idea whether it is tieing into rebirth. Also Juan Ferryara is put on the book, and he is not a new artist. The story itself was pretty good, especially since we saw Superman use a new power called microwave vision. I’m just really interested to see how this will actually play into rebirth, especially how it seems like Joker is a hero now.

I personally don’t really like the Harley Quinn as a character, so I’m probably biased towards this story. For a Harley Quinn story it is probably more enjoyable than most I’ve read. It was like a civil war in the prison. The art was similar to the current Harley series, so that is a positive, but I’m sure Harley Quinn fans will really enjoy this.

In conclusion I thought almost all were really good and do show promise. Even the ones I wasn’t the biggest fan of, I recognize some people did, and would be interested to see all of these stories progress.
