Green Lanterns #11

Artist: Robson Rocha
Colourist: Blond

When Green lanterns finished its first arc, I enjoyed but not really for the story, but more because of the characterization of both Simon and Jessica. I wasn’t so sure if I was going to continue to read the book but hoped that the second main arc was strong story-wise. Well, this arc is really good and gets better as it progresses.

This issue is interesting as it takes time to analyze the characters of Jessica and Simon. Since the beginning of this book, Humphries has been telling us each characters backstory, and he finally uses this issue to show us the point of that repetition. We are used to seeing Jessica and Simon, doubt and judge themselves, however in this issue we see the Phantom Ring user, assess them in front of the whole world.

In #9 of this series we were introduced to Frank, the phantom ring user. Humphries made us feel sorry for him, but in this issue we are presented with the question of, does everyone who wants to be a hero, deserve to be a hero. The way Humphries answers this is really interesting.

The art although in this art is not great, especially in the expression of the faces. I understand that Robson Rocha was trying to make Frank look, unstable but his face just ended up looking contorted. There is also a page where the face of the dog, looks like a rabbit.

This is another solid issue, to a great arc as Humphries tries to revolutionize the Green Lantern mythos and allows it to be of easy access to new readers. Although the art does suffer for the most part, it is good. One more complaint I would say is I would like a bit more Simon and Jessica characterization like in the first arc, but that is just me. I cannot wait to see how this arc ends, especially with the inclusion of Volthoom.
