Batman #63

Writer: Tom King
Artist: Mikel Janin
Colorist: Jordie Bellaire
Publisher: DC Comics

Tom King’s nightmare arc started a while ago and we this issue is the last issue before the nightmare arc takes a break because of the Batman/Flash crossover. So far, I have been enjoying this current arc by Tom King and all the superstar artists that he has for this arc.

Tom King uses this issue to re-imagine what Batman and Catwoman’s lives would be like if Catwoman had agreed to marry Batman. Mikel Janin returns as the artist for this issue, which is apt since he was the main artist for Batman #50, so it is cool to see him return to illustrate if Batman and Catwoman were actually together.

Regarding this issue, I liked it a lot less than the previous ones. The story was okay but in a very typical Tom King fashion it doesn’t feel like there is a whole lot of story there in the first place. The issue wants to convey that it is hopeless for Batman to try and escape from the nightmares, however it just relies on various montages of Batman and Catwoman stopping crime or them just being together. I feel that the message could have been conveyed in a better or more exciting way.

John Constantine also appears in this issue as a ‘ghost of Christmas past’ type character. He guides Batman through the dream, nightmare rather, and tries to advise him and tell him that none of it is real. John Constantine was a really weird choice for this as he Batman, as a character, doesn’t really have a relationship with Constantine. If King was looking for a magical character perhaps Zatanna would have made some more sense.

Overall, I still liked the issue, however a combination of King’s writing and Janin’s art really makes this issue feel like style over substance. Whilst I’ve been enjoying the arc so far, I feel like this issue is just padding in this arc.
