Flash #41

Writer: Joshua Williamson
Artist: Carlos D'Anda
Colorist: Luis Guerrero
Publisher: DC Comics

I honestly don’t know how I really feel about this issue. There is a lot to like about the issue, but I feel that the issue also has quite a few problems. Williamson left the last issue on a cliff hanger, as Wally took over the mantle of the Flash, however in this issue it feels like he only Flash for the second half of the book.

The issue is split in its focus on both Barry and Wally, however it does feel like in this issue Williamson only really gets the voice of Wally correct. Barry loses his powers and Williamson begins to portray Barry as disingenuous in his desire to be the Flash. Williamson revealed last issue that Barry had the fear he would be nothing without his powers, which was interesting, however Williamson doubles down on this to the point where it makes Barry feel really shallow. The issue itself ends with Barry freeing Godspeed, which feels rushed, especially since he relied on Godspeed in the last arc.

The Wally part of the issue is really the strongest part of this issue as Williamson uses Wally to reminisce about his time in Central City and the impact various people in the city made on him, especially his aunt. Since this is one of the few moments we see Wally in this series, this is a nice moment from Wally.

In conclusion, the issue was really a mixed bag. The art by D'Anda is fantastic but feels dragged down by the writing and plot. There is also a lot less focus on the villain in this issue, which I think hurts the overall story.
