Sam Humphries run on Green Lanterns was really strong, so when it was announced that he was leaving I was concerned, since I was really enjoying his run. So far Tim Seeley has done a couple of arcs which have been good but doesn’t feel as if they have reached the standard of Humphries run. However, with the first issue of this arc it definitely could be one of the best arcs done with these two characters.

I really enjoyed this issue and found it to be really fun. Humphries tended to focus on one of the characters for each of his arcs, however Seeley’s use of the characters utilizes both at the same time. In the first half of the issue we do see how both of these characters have grown and they do really feel like a team. We also get to see a cast of familiar heroes that haven’t been seen in a long time, in most cases.

The idea of Caper, the superhero dating app, was seeded throughout Seeley’s run and we are finally seeing where that idea was going. Basically, superheroes are being kidnapped by someone using their dating profiles. Seeley relies on the friendship between the two characters, to possibly tease a future romantic relationship between them. Originally when I saw this idea in solicitations I didn’t like it, but I can see how it could be fun or at the very least interesting to explore.

In conclusion, this was a really fun issue, and a strong first issue for the start of the first arc. If Seeley can keep up the quality of this arc, it could be one of the best arcs with this characters, and could also show Seeley stepping out of Humphries shadow and making his Green Lanterns run feel definitive.
