Wildstorm: Michael Cray is a book a that seems to be following a set style. The earlier issue they set up the villain and let us know how the villain is different to their DC Universe counterpart then the next issue Michael defeats them, all whilst we learn a bit more about his powers. Now this isn’t a criticism as the writing of the set-up issue is really well done and Bryan Hill and Warren Ellis distort the hero well but also give them a believable motivation.

The previous hero was Green Arrow, who was targeting and hunting the poor. If you know anything about Green Arrow you would know he is often a champion of the poor and fights for them. Now we meet Barry Allen who has his super speed powers but he targets people that are working on AI. AI is a real concern to many people and it makes sense that in Barry’s own distorted way he believes he is helping. The fact that he has a split personality doesn’t help him, although in this issue we didn’t really see much from the other personality other that it berating Barry.

I would have to say where the issue suffers is where it focuses on Michael as we still don’t really have an idea of what his power is, other than he can destroy things and it is triggered by emotion. The team that we met in the last issue, have yet to really be that well used. They seem to just pop up when needed and for the rest of the issue have no influence. One aspect is the warning from his father who is understandably wary, but could be foreshadowing that Michael is still killing the wrong people.

I’m still really enjoying this book and really would love more people to read it as it is as strong as the main series, although the art regarding faces waas not always strong. One thing I’m dreading is that it only has 12 issues as I would love it to have so much more as the very idea of distorted heroes is interesting.
